    Pursuant to Article 103 of the Act of 13 June 2005 on electronic communications, the BIPT is responsible for the monitoring of the execution of the universal service and shall submit an annual report to the Minister regarding possible adjustments to the universal service obligations.

    All you need to know about 5G

    The Regions’ general brief aiming to regulate the protection of the environment also entails the power to adopt measures to prevent and minimise the risks related to the non-ionising radiation. It is therefore the Regions that define the radiation standards (standards for maximum emission) the operators have to comply with. The mobile operators are required to comply with these radiation standards, regardless of the technology they use. 

    The Regions also carry out inspections in the field to verify whether the radiation standards set by them are complied with.

  • The BIPT publishes a call for candidates for the future radio spectrum

    Brussels, 14 January 2022 – By publishing the call for candidates, the BIPT launched the long-awaited auction of the future radio spectrum. The auction concerns the allocation of the new 5G spectrum and of the existing 2G and 3G spectrum. This auction scheduled for June 2022 will help define the mobile telecom landscape in Belgium for the next 20 years. The auction also includes a package of reserved spectrum for a possible new mobile operator wishing to enter the market.

    In this opinion, provided at the request of the Chairwoman of the commissie voor Grondwet en Institutionele vernieuwing van de Kamer van volksvertegenwoordigers (committee in charge of the constitution and institutional renewal of the Chamber of Representatives), the BIPT states that it sees no reason to embed a right to (access to) open and adequate Internet in the Constitution.
