The OECD is the successor to the Organization for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC), which was established shortly after the Second World War to manage Marshall Plan aid from the United States and Canada. Since taking over the task from OEEC in 1961, the organisation's objective has been to strengthen the economy in its member states, improve their efficiency, stimulate the market economy, develop free trade and contribute to growth in industrialised and developing countries.
